The League of Airport & Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) has organized a pogramme tagged “A Night With Basil” to celebrate Mr. Basil Agboarumi on his emergence as the first Public Relations practitioner to rise to become the Chief Executive Officer of a major aviation organization in Nigeria.
Speaking yesterday at the event, the Chairman of LAAC, Mr. Olusegun Koiki said the programme was organized to enable Basil share his experiences on his journey to the top and inspire upcoming journalists and PR practitioners on their potentials, while giving a personal assessment of the aviation industry.
The programme was attended by PR practitioners and Heads of Corporate Communications of various organizations in the aviation industry. Executives of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and management of SIFAX Group were equally present at the event.
Speaker after speaker, media managers including Mrs. Herietta Yakubu, GM, Corporate Communications, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN); Mr. Sam Adurogboye, GM, Public Affairs, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA); Mr. Muyiwa Akande, GM, Corporate Communications, SIFAX Group, Vanessa Uansohia, AGM, Corporate Communications, SAHCO and Mr. Olu Owolabi, former MD of SAHCOL, represented by Otunba Babatunde Adebayo all extolled the virtues of Mr. Agboarumi chief of which was humility.
Mr. Basil Agboarumi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of The Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) holds a National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication from the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mass Communication from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, a Masters in Communications Studies (Mcs) from the Lagos State University, and a Certificate in Creative Design & Digital Communication from the School of Media & Communications of the Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos.
Basil joined the Skypower Aviation Handling Company Limited (SAHCOL), then a subsidiary of the Nigeria Airways Limited, as the Pioneer Staff/Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the late 90s. After the privatization and subsequent takeover of SAHCOL by the SIFAX Group in 2009, he was appointed Head of Corporate Communications, with a mandate to spearhead the re-branding of the new Skyway Aviation Handling Company Limited.
He later rose to become the General Manager. Corporate Communications and in September 2018, he was appointed as substantive MD/CEO of the company after serving in an Acting capacity for six months.
In his remarks, Mr. Agboarumi said the achievement of this success was the work of God as he had over the years, merely focused on executing any assignments given to him even without pay without thinking of position, especially at the early stage of his career. He said he had worked under eight managing Directors in SAHCOL, having started his career as an IT student in the 90s. It was his level of commitment as an IT student that motivated Mr. Olu Owolabi and Mr. Chris Aligbe many years ago to get him engaged with SAHCOL.
